And 99% of the time, I made it outstanding customer service. It's not hard to do! The customer is handing you money for something - and you want to deliver a great experience, so that they keep coming back! It's not rocket science!

But we have all had it happen to us. You are having a great day. You walk into a store or a restaurant and get a bitter, unhappy person to wait on us. Or, maybe YOU are having a really bad day, and it's affecting your mood. And someone tries to provide you good service and you bite off their head for no good reason at all, other than the fact you are having a bad day.

Todays post has nothing to do with blogging or Web 2.0. But it DOES have to do with helping your business be better. And I assume if you are a reader of this site, that's why you are here. How to take your business to next level, in some way.

Customer service is in such a bad state right now. I can not tell you how many times I have gotten awful service in the last couple years, yet the person delivering the bad service, thinks nothing of it. It usually has even nothing to do with someone's bad mood. They just don't care. You know how many nightclubs and restaurants I am a "regular" at? The owners know me by face and yet 80% of them never even stop and say "HI" to me.

GREAT customer service can make a mediocre product shine. And BAD customer service can tarnish a great product. Just this past weekend we had brunch at our favorite Chicago Sunday brunch spot - Angelina's. The food is great! The crowd is fun! But you can ALWAYS be assured of mediocre-bad service from the waitstaff! We just accept it because we like the food, a lot of friends eat there. and it's a great location. However if I was Brad Pitt, I can guarantee my waiter at Angelina's would deliver 5 star service!

Over the weekend, I met author Donna Cutting at the SOBCon08 blogging conference. In her new book The Celebrity Experience: Insider Secrets to Delivering Red Carpet Customer Service, Donna shares stories about how YOU can do a better job of providing customer service. This book is packed with stories about GREAT customer service from the hotel, food and beverage, airline, and so many other industries that if you have a job that relates to customer service in some way, this book will have something you can relate to.

Combining the best practices of the Hollywood celebrity scene with those of the business world, The Celebrity Experience is the extreme makeover of customer service! Learn how to generate buzz and positive word of mouth about your business by giving your customers the red carpet treatment.

Imagine a world where red carpets were rolled out for you wherever you went and you were always greeted by name and with a smile. Imagine being admired and complimented by strangers on a daily basis. Imagine if those who did business with you always bent over backwards to cater to your personal desires and needs. If that sounds like a fantasyland, it is. And it's called Hollywood! But the principles can be applied to any business.

It all comes down to ATTITUDE. Until you develop the right attitudes in your team, or in yourself, you cannot deliver great customer service. I read a great line at 1000 Ventures that said, YOUR ATTITUDE DETERMINES YOUR ALTITUDE!

Derrick Sorles and Michael Snell - We Help "Pull" New Business To You!
Your Business MD's- Business Blog Consultants -Web 2.0 Consultants and Strategists

donna cutter the celebrity experience gal morale red carpet service customer service Turbo Tagger

Woopra is a revolutionary Web analytics tool designed from the ground up to break all the rules. By splitting the service into a client + server application, they've radically decreased the load on network resources, and enabled the graphing and analysis engine to harness the power of desktop processing.

SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Woopra is the world's most comprehensive, information rich, easy to use, real-time Web tracking and analysis application.
It is in beta testing right now and you must have an invite to join. I saw the invites on EBAY for about $25 this week!

Write for your readers and write for people searching for the information you can offer. That's the bottom line really. I was at the SOBCon08 conference last weekend and overheard two bloggers talking about how Google, allegedly, ranks websites. Google has an intricate recipe for their algorithm and rest assured, they change that recipe often!

Some online publishers are so obsessed with trying to figure out who Google ranks them. Just do a good job and it will happen. - We know that Google looks at incoming links to your posts from links that have authority. It someone with a Page Rank of 7 is linking to what you are talking about, that's a good thing.

I have read that using good anchor text for your links is good - but be careful, it can look spammy. You always want to hyperlink good keywords. Never hyperlink words like CLICK HERE. So if you sell PET SUPPLIES, And every outgoing link uses the words PET SUPPLIES, Google can look at that as anchor spam. Instead, vary your keywords. CAT SUPPLIES, DOG SUPPLIES, CAT PRODUCTS, PET PRODUCTS, etc.

Search engines also look at frequency of posts. If you post once or twice a week, for a year, that shows consistency. If you launch a blog, as some people do, with 90 posts the first 30 days, then let it set empty for 2 months, and throw another 10 posts on it, that shows inconsistency.

I have also read domain age is taken into consideration. When you buy your domain, but it for at least 2 years. 5 is even better. And don't wait till the last day of it's life to renew it. Renew early. Show that you are in it for the long haul.

Keyword density and keyword search are also important. How are people finding you? Keyword search results are constantly monitored. What keywords brought the visitor to your site and what keywords they used to search once on your site are important. Google is looking for relavancy. A properly optimized web site with relevant keywords and keyphrases will receive highly targeted traffic from serious prospective buyers, which in the end, will better help those visiting prospects convert into buying customers. AND Google will see that.

So don't get too caught up in your page rank with Google, your authority numbers at Technorati, your Alexa ranking.... write good stuff and everything will fall into place!

Derrick Sorles and Michael Snell - We Help "Pull" New Business To You!
Your Business MD's- Business Blog Consultants -Web 2.0 Consultants and Strategists

google page rank google algorithm anchor text anchor spam Turbo Tagger

And when you claim your blog there, you can monitor the blogs incoming links to it and you can usually see some traffic if your keywords are properly used and your posts are tagged properly.

BlogCatalog and MyBlogLog are also good sources to be listed with. Both are directories as well as social media sites and are good places to network and get exposure for your blog.

LS BLOGS has a page rank of 6 and offers fast approval. Blog Top List has a page rank of 6 and blogs are listed by a scoring system. Blog Hop is more of a search than a directory. A good opportunity for qualified traffic. They have a page rank of 6. Search 4 Blogs has a ranking of 6 and we have had good luck with.

And of course DMOZ. It's the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. Your site must be 6 months old and it's trickey getting into the right category and takes a while to show up. But they are an authority.

Derrick Sorles and Michael Snell - We Help "Pull" New Business To You!
Your Business MD's- Business Blog Consultants -Web 2.0 Consultants and Strategists

While there are many terrific blogs around, there are also common but easily fixable, mistakes that bloggers tend to make.

Not linking to other blogs. Blogging in a vacuum! Always have a blogroll. If someone were interested in reading your blog, they would likely be interested in reading the other blogs you like to read. Blogging is all about community. Linking to other blogs also sends a positive message to customers because it shows that you are involved in sharing. It's not just all about YOU! - LINK-LINK-LINK! It's all about sharing! I don't care if you link to a Wikipedia definition, just link!

Not having an email link or contact page. How is someone supposed to reach you?! Sometimes readers might want to contact you, but not leave a comment on your blog. If you are worried about getting your email address spammed, a simple contact page can prevent that. Otherwise, you can write your email address in this form: name at domain dot com. This will prevent spam bots from finding your email address.

While most bloggers give an easy and accessible way to either contact them via email or leave a comment, I noticed that some blogs do not allow the readers to leave comments! Hello? This is about sharing. And community. If you want a static website - build a static website. Turning off the "comments" function sends a bad message to customers, because it seems like the company does not want to hear from their customers/readers. More than anything else, blogs are communication tools. If a blog is used only to share information but does not allow communication between the company and its customers, its success and popularity will suffer. Many blogs without a comment feature have low page rankings and likely have less returning visitors.

Not having an RSS feed button. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and it is a way for people to read a blog without always actually visiting the blog. They can view the entries through websites such as bloglines.com and feedster.com. RSS feeds are extremely important, because most people will read your blog via RSS feeds. You are more likely to pick up regular readers if you have an RSS feed. - Savvy readers use RSS! Make it available to them! Let them subscribe via e-mail also. FEEDBURNER allows you to set up both RSS and e-mail subscriptions all in one place, so they are easy to manage. PLUS, Feedburner now has a PING SHOT feature you should be using as well. To automatically ping sites for you, every time they scan their site!

Not updating often enough. The more often you update, the more popular your blog will be. Many blog readers like to read their favorite blogs on a daily basis. If you do not blog regularly, you run the risk of losing readers. - Plus, as a bonus, think of it this way; every time you update is another chance for the search engines to find your blog. The more times you enter, the greater your chances of winning in the search game!

Andy Wibbels - Findability

Local search. Consumers are learning they can find resources not just across the globe, but down the street. "Findability" is crucial, whether you are a global organization or local mom-and-pop.

Marie Lena Tupot - Mobile

Mobile apps. But not in a whiz-bang, over-the-top manner; the sort of incremental mobile apps that make ordinary things even easier, like let you pay back friends on the fly, split the check at restaurants, pre-order your coffee so you can bypass the line at a local café, pay your belated phone bill, donate to your political candidate ... It's the little things that take us by storm.

Joost de Valk - SEO

The technique/technology most worthy of any marketer's attention is SEO. It's the cheapest and best way of getting quality traffic to your domains. Especially due to the emergence of so-called universal search, ie. the integration of the results from vertical search engines like images, books and local into the "main" search results, more chances of driving cheap, high-quality traffic have come up.

Joe Pulizzi - Content Marketing

The single biggest issue/technology that deserves the most attention is not a site or an application, but more an organizational philosophy. It's the content marketing movement -- which is the philosophy of marketing services not by traditional methods, but by delivering valuable, relevant and compelling content to customers and prospects on a consistent basis. This is being done through all media platforms, and we are seeing companies like P&G and Nike put a large amount of money and resources into these efforts.

Brian Keith - Search Marketing

All For You by Brian Keith

Search marketing. This includes search engine optimization, search engine marketing (also called pay-per-click), and dealing with universal search. When Jeremiah and others say that your corporate website is less relevant than ever, they're right. But if you ignore the basics in favor of the hot new technologies, you will fall behind those who made sure they built a strong foundation. Are you highly ranked for your most important keywords and phrases? Have you done the research to know what those phrases really are? Are you paying attention to how you are spending money on search engine marketing?

Martin Calle - Keywords

Madison Avenue

The most overlooked piece of digital technology today is the simplest and most overlooked: the keyword. With 81 billion blogs and websites, business owners depend upon keywords to drive site visits. But we all use the same keywords, so it becomes impossible for Google's AdSense for Search and Content Optimization Teams to help you build truly effective campaigns, regardless of the business you are in. If you are an ad agency, "ad agency" would be a keyword, so would "branding," "strategy," "product positioning," "differentiation," "marketing" and a plethora of other terms we all use. So using keywords, differentiation becomes impossible unless you find a way to identify keywords that only your site can offer.

Kevin Tomczak - Blogging

PowerUp

Blogging continues to be one of the most influential communications channels for B2B marketers in 2008. This channel is a precursor to a true social network, and allows companies to continue the conversation beyond our traditional touch points. Yesterday's mass marketing strategies don't work -- we're on the customer's time, and by keeping conversations going through blogging, we're increasing the chance that we'll be present when the customer needs our product or service.

We've also just begun to scratch the surface of the SEO benefits of blogging. In the US, roughly 80% of internet use (excluding e-mail) begins with a search. And a majority of business purchasers use the internet for research before a purchase is made. Blogging gives a company a lot of content containing a lot of keywords, and, with a lot of incoming and outbound links, that's SEO gold.

These were our top 7! What's funny is that we have been preaching these for 2 years now! I think businesses are finally starting to get it! Read the full article at Advertising Age!

Derrick Sorles and Michael Snell - We Help "Pull" New Business To You!
Your Business MD's- Business Blog Consultants -Web 2.0 Consultants and Strategists

crystal ball 2.0 web 2.0 consultants derrick sorles SEO SEM blogging Turbo Tagger

FriendFeed is a new service for people to keep up-to-date on the web pages, photos, videos and music that their friends and family are sharing. It offers a unique way to discover and discuss information among friends.

The goal of FriendFeed is to make content on the Web more relevant and useful for you by using your existing social network as a tool for discovering interesting information. You get a customized feed made up of the content that your friends shared — from news articles to family photos to interesting links and videos. And your friends get their customized feeds, full of the cool stuff that you’ve shared.

Why should I use FriendFeed, you ask?

It's open: FriendFeed automatically imports shared stuff from sites across the web, making all the sites you already use a little more social.

It’s flexible: FriendFeed requires as much effort as you want to put in. You can use it just as a way to see what your friends are up to — browsing and reading the stuff they share, or you can actively share your own items and leave comments and have discussions with your friends. There are also lots of ways to access and display your FriendFeed.

And it’s easy to get started: There’s nothing to install, and you can share stuff on your feed as soon as you sign up. Light-weight conversations naturally sprout up around shared items and you can even get introduced to interesting news from friends of your friends.

How does FriendFeed work?

FriendFeed aggregates all of your activity from the sites you choose using web crawling technologies similar to those used by search engines. For most sites, all you need to provide FriendFeed is your username, and the FriendFeed crawler will automatically find and broadcast all of your public activity on that site. For other sites, or for services that contain private data and require special forms of authentication, FriendFeed takes advantage of the APIs provided by those sites to collect your activity.

"By using an automated, crawl-based approach to finding the content you find interesting, our hope is that your FriendFeed experience will be completely "maintenance free" — you can help your friends and family discover what you’re sharing without changing the way you already use your favorite web-based products."

Derrick Sorles and Michael Snell - We Help "Pull" New Business To You!
Your Business MD's- Business Blog Consultants -Web 2.0 Consultants and Strategists

friendfeed friend feed web 2.0 content sharing Turbo Tagger

Are the understaffed? Are the overwhelmed by the number of blogs these days? Do their numbers really matter? Google "technorati problems" - a lot of people have issues with them!

I take all that data with a grain of salt these days. We too have been frustrated with Technorati. We have one blog that has not been pinged in 100 days! When we write them, we get no answers back. And when we checked the forums, many people were having the same issues. Not being pinged. Links not being counted.

We have a couple new clients who are so caught up in the numbers. Their Technorati rank, their Alexa rank, their quantcast data….none of it can bee 100% accurate. It is my opinion, just write a good blog, link to others, get incoming links…..as long as I come up in Google searches on Page one, I am happy. If people are finding me organically and my phone rings with new business, I am happy. If my readership is steadily growing, I am happy. Decide what is you want from your blog or what you expect your blog to do. Don't get caught up in the numbers game. That’s my 2 cents!

Over the last 2 years we have come into contact with numerous people who wanted to start a blog and most never did. Or they did, and got off on the wrong foot, abandoned the blog, or they had unrealistic expectations about what the blog might deliver in the short-term from an SEO perspective and were frustrated.

We have been doing this for over 2 years now and have launched about 25 blogs. We have made many mistakes along the way and therefore, also have learned a lot. And continue to learn every day as this business changes. Eventually, all of our blogs have ended up on Page One of Google for organic, primary and numerous secondary key word searches...

Here are some of the most common blog mistakes we've seen -

1. Never actually starting one! I have 3 friends and 5 clients that have been talking about launching blog for a year now! Do they realize, if they had in fact launched their blog one year ago, where they would be today??? Just DO IT already!

2. Using Subdomains. We are not a big fan of hosting your site somewhere that has to use a subdomain. (ie typepad, blogspot). If it's personal, that's fine. But for anything business related, where you hope to get search engine lift, we do not recommend it. - Buy a domain and use it. In fact, buy a few domains. If you don't buy it and you don't own it , it's not yours. So www.worldsbestflorist.typepad.com really belongs to typepad. Plus, you deprive yourself of potential search engine lift by hosting your site with subdomains.

3. Design. DO NOT get caught up on design. Blogs are about words, not design. Blogs are all about the content. And that content is indexed by search engines. You can be one page one with the the most awful looking blog out there! Search engines do not care about flash and design. Blogs are about simplicity. That's why search engines like blogs more than websites.

4. Expecting too much too soon. The first 90 days are about building "the temple." Most directories won't even let you list with them until you are 90 days old or have more than 36 posts. Don't even try to get traffic or build traffic the first few months. It's all about planting the seeds, building the temple, and then traffic will come!

5. Making Money. Every month I have clients that want to start a blog to make "some extra passive revenue." MOST blogs do not make a dime! At least the first year or two. Once you get a page rank of 5 or 6, in about 18 months to 24 months, then maybe, you can start to monetize your blog. Sure you can put Google AdSense on your blog. And make about 25 cents per month.
Online advertising kind of sucks.

We'll be the first to admit it.

Fraud is rampant. Publishers and advertisers alike don't have a lot of control over which ads show up where. Ad networks don't tell you what their take is. Nobody is sure if they're getting a good deal.

Project Wonderful changes all that.

Project Wonderful reinvents online advertising. We've made click fraud impossible. We give advertisers the power to choose what sites their ads appear on - and publishers the freedom to choose what ads show up on their sites. We don't have absurdly high minimum-payout levels. We've made the entire online advertising experience transparent, trustworthy, and fair - as well as more profitable, for everyone involved! It's why our slogan is "Everybody wins."

How we help publishers make the most money.

Instead of setting a fixed price for advertising, we publish ads on your site using our innovative Infinite Auction model. Advertisers name the price they want to pay (and when they want to pay it), and whoever is willing to pay the most gets their ad shown! It's profitable and fair to both you and the advertiser, and allows prices to respond quickly to changes in your site.

A friend of ours just started trying out the site - we'll sign up today and keep you posted on how it works!

Derrick Sorles and Michael Snell - We Help "Pull" New Business To You!
Your Business MD's- Business Blog Consultants -Web 2.0 Consultants and Strategists

project wonderful SEO traffic tips online advertising Turbo Tagger
