How Important is Google Page Rank Anymore?

Being a professional blogger for  4  years  now, I have been conditioned to follow certain metrics, like  Google  Page Rankings. Lately however, Google is doing a lot of tweaking and revamping and peoples  PR  is jumping up and down like crazy.

Startling news from Google Webmaster Trends Analyst Susan Moskwa  now  comes  fourth....that Google has ditched PageRank from Webmaster Tools.

"We've been telling people for a long time that they shouldn't focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it's the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true," states Moskwa. "We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it." (Source: WebProNews)

SO NOW WHAT? If you work hard on your site and build it's repuation, how do you tell the real good sites from the posers?  PR  was a  way, at a glance, to get a glimpse of a sites authority and realness.

Now we just have to guess?

This could be a big problem I think.....

Derrick - As I'm sure you know PR is still available via the toolbar, but then again that has it's own problems. I've heard so much confusion about "Google abandoning page rank". Thanks for including Google quote above.

As is says, they only want us not to focus on PR. They are not walking away from one of their founding principles.

I say to give it some time and many of the SEO tool developer will release a PR emulator.

Anyway, I just wrote a series of three posts on business blogging tips and wondered if you would mind offering an opinion. See http://www.site-seeker.com/briansblog/?p=272

Thanks so much Brian.  I did read your series of posts and found them both comprehensive and insightful for someone or a business to set a blog up foundational for long-term success.  The million dollar tip you missed was domain name selection strategy for a blog however, critical in where you'll appear on google page one in primary organic keyword search and how quickly you'll get there and stay.  Contact me directly if you wish to discuss further.  Thanks for stopping by and keep up the great work!
    Best,

Since the PR goes crazy, I stop relying to it. As long as I am posting quality content and I have readers that is enough for me.

For me PR is still important to tell the real good sites or blogs. But when it comes to SE rankings i think high PR really doesn't matter at all. Sometimes high PR sites outrank by low PR sites on rankings.

Thanks for a self-contained note on Google PR relevance.I have almost given up on this quarter as such page ranks means little especially when you do not know the criteria and parameters of specific algorythms applied by Google. My sites went up and down with their page ranks and I could never understand why and how of it.
From the marketability point of view the page ranks have attained importance and lot much weieghtage has been given to this lone factor. What else than the "Good Neighborhood" mean the PR afterall?
