10 Reasons Your Company Shouldn't Blog - By B. L. Ochman
I've been a big fan of B. L. Ochman's "whatsnextblog" for some time. She is not one to mince words and I find her insights well worth the read.
Recently, she wrote "10 Reasons Your Company Shouldn't Blog" and put together 10 quick requirements that a company should check out when considering starting a blog...
My 2 favorites:
#4. Blogging takes time – lots of it. Let's even say a CEO is a great writer, who enjoys researching and crafting posts. And let's say he or she will write about what people want to hear about and not just write about what the company wants to say. And they he/she is willing to update a few times a week. All of that takes anywhere from two to four hours a post.
#8. A blog is not a quick fix – the results come in the long term, the same way they do with PR.

I beg to disagree but blogging has been one of the facets for drawing traffic for our company site. besides, quality links are also pointing to us because of our blogs. truly blogging is a waste of time especially when it is done poorly not onpage seo standard.

Sorry for the confusion! The article was done to be tongue-in-cheeek! EVERYONE NEEDS A BLOG, for sure! Websites DO NOT generate organic traffic. Blogs DO. The problem is, many business people think you just build a blog, like a website, its goes live, and POOF! like magic, traffic starts pouring in!
You need patience. You need to invest time. Time every week. You need some fresh content. But the bottom line is it's an investment. The more you feed it, the bigger and more powerful it grows. I have blogs now that are two years old and command top page one Google searches for my keywords. I OWN those words now. Most people have no clue how to properly start a blog and get off on the right foot. That's the problem.

I recently wrote a post myself about 3 reasons why people, in general, shouldn't blog. http://www.jesseliebman.com/2008/12/15/3-reasons-why-blogging-isnt-for-you
It's along the same lines, but I think having the passion for blogging is really the make or break reason.

Hello,
It’s not profitable - yeah everyone thinks they are going to write a great blog, be an A-list kind of blogger, put up some adds and get some revenue. Or maybe they’ll have some people refer to their blog as their resume and get the next big job or find the next great partner…. or maybe they’ll just rent their chest and clear $10k……”
Unfortunately, you are right. Most people have shortcut intention and as a result, they suffer. Blogging is just like every other profession. If you want to shine, you must work hard just like every other field.

It IS NOT profitable for many people. You should never set up a blog, with the sole goal to make money at it. However, it can yeild GREAT results. And every business - big and small - SHOULD HAVE ONE. The ROI is well worth the time investment. You can PULL new business to you....you can generate leads....you can get new customers. And you may attract some advertisiers and generate more income that way. But it takes time a patience.
