Are There Any Good Domains Left? The Importance of Keyword Search and Findability

STOP THE INSANITY!

A client called me the other day, who will we say is  ABC and Associates.

This is my  FREE ADVICE  (which I would normally charge $125 an hour for) for the day;

And it's truly PRICELESS and so many people make this mistake over and over again and again.

DO NOT call your site (whether it's a website or blog) your company name, unless it has a couple keywords in the domain.

And don't tell me all the good domains are taken!

Example #1 - If no one knows who ABC & Associates are, how are they going to find you? Are you a divorce attorney? Are you in Chicago? There you go, your keywords are  DIVORCE  ATTORNEY   &  CHICAGO!

Example #2 - The perfect keyword friendly domains for your business probably are taken. However, by adding a word or two at the beginning or the end, or changing the line-up, you have the next best thing. And if it's a blog domain, you can rise above the rest, eventually.

A good example is that we wanted a  site called  LIFE BY DESIGN. That name was taken.

Lifebydesign.com was taken.
Lifebydesign.net was taken.
Lifebydesignsite.com was taken.

We chose http://www.officiallifebydesign.com   -  It took about 6 months, but we eventually rose above all three of them, when you Google  LIFE BY DESIGN. So we are right where we wanted to be in the first place! Page one, number one.

Now recently, someone started a site called   lifebydesignnw.com   and their site got placed in the number one spot and we are number two currently. So something tells me  it might be wise to choose your keywords first, and add a word at the end, based on how Google is currently indexing sites.  - But who knows, Google changes the rules and recipe all the time.

Bottom line is that it is all about keyword search, top of page one and FINDABILITY!

    Thank you for this great tip. I had a server running a few years ago. Being a web host was my hobby with 10-20 customers just for fun. I want to give it a more serious try, and was motivated after reading this article. So I sat down to try to find good domains and ended up with webhostbeetle.com - I searched the internet for the most common animal, and the beetle kept showing up. I tried with different animals at first. Ending up with the beetle. I also bought hostbeetle.com as well. Even the slogan was created in my midle of the night creative moment. - We won't bug you. :) All this just because I read this post.

      Very clever name! - I might also suggest you buy a second domain, more generic. Like  thebestwebhosting.com    because  people would be looking for the BEST WEB HOSTING, and could find you!   Use both domains for the site.  One that is cute -  and one that will  attract organic search!  Thats the key!
