Is Traffic Up or Down? Is There Enough Traffic to go Around?

I was reading about a couple bloggers recently, who had both started online publishing  about 5 years ago, and have both decided to shut down their blogs. Both had more personal blogs, not business blogs, and both have seen a drop in traffic over the last two years.

One of them said, "Some blame the rise of MySpace and Facebook,  followed by Twitter and Plurk,  have stolen people’s attention away from blogs.  Suddenly it wasn’t necessary to read or write big long blog posts to stay in touch with your online friends.  You could challenge them to a game of Scrabble on Facebook or write a 140-character or less tweet/plurk to tell them what you were up to.

Eventually these “micro-blogging” communities will fade in popularity too, and something else will replace them.  As evidence of this cyclical pattern of the web, I would ask the old-timers if they remember Tribe.  At one time, it was the hot spot for  social online community." -  Remember YAHOO groups? OK, I am dating myself.

Some of the early bloggers and online  publishers  are saying the blogosphere has changed significantly in the last couple years.  That may or may not be true. I think it has changed - and people have realized how to attract readers (and potential customers) by publishing the content they are looking for. In my opinion, 5-7 years ago, there were a lot more  "personal" blogs. Blogs have evolved. In the last 2 years, we have seen a growth in business blogs, expert blogs, celebrity blogs.....more blogs of interest.

I think there is still a place for personal blogs, family blogs, and even pet blogs...but you can't and should not  expect to compete in the same arena as those publishing "information" blogs. We live in an information society.

85% of People Find What They Are
Looking For by Using Search Engines.

And we can only consume so much information! So I believe that it is true, many personal bloggers have suffered. However, good content, good information, and lots of hard work (because it isn't easy!) will still draw new eyes to your site.

How is your traffic? Growing? Declining?  Let us hear your thoughts.....
