Directory Maximizer
SEO Directory Listings Traffic tips Turbo Tagger
In response to the recent piece we ran on Directory Listings, while I was submitting my own sites to various directories, I stumbled across Directory Maximizer!
For .14 cents each, they will submit your site and profile to various directories. So for $14 per 100, I gave it a try. (They can submit up to 775 directory listings for you!) We have a new site we just launched, Best Discount Travel Opportunity that we are trying to get traffic generating quickly, so I gave it a try. Over the next 12 days, all 100 submissions should be done. As each directory accepts the submission, you should be notified by e-mail. I let you know what happens!

So what happened? Did it go well were you happy with the service?

I have used the service for 3 of my sites. It's very quick and easy and I think worth the investment. However, I have not really seen any increase in traffic. I am not sure how many people really use directories and their effectiveness......but it was a cheap investment!

I've used this service as well for 2 of my sites. While I didn't get much traffic from the directories, I did see an improvement in my rankings on Google and MSN for the terms I targeted. I can attribute to the submissions since that's the only promotion I've done in the last few months. So from my experience, I'd have to say like derrick above, it was indeed a "cheap investment"

I subscribed to the service about 3 weeks ago for my website www.tire-chain-dealer.com>">www.tire-chain-dealer.com> www.tire-chain-dealer.com . After subscribing, I have read several blogs recomending against using this type of service as it increases your risk of landing in the Google Sandbox. It seems that many of the listings are low PR sites many with a PR of 0. Furthermore, many of them may trip a filter for unrelated content ie, a directory listing for Pakistan. I am going to ask that they stop my submission process to avoid problems with Google.

I just want to add some more to my above posting. I have taken my issues to Directory Maximizer and they responded as follows:
Issue 1: Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or Page Rank.
Google’s referring more to the linking scheme of exchanging sites and other manipulative linking tactics than submitting to directories. In fact, Google states in their own guidelines about “Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites.” While it doesn’t clearly state about submitting to all directories, we can assume that Google doesn’t consider directories as a falsely manipulative link building scheme since directories involve some kind of editorial control and more over, google never penalizes a sites based on it’s incoming links alone.
Issue 2: Growing a link base too quickly
Directory links take a lot of time to come in any case.
Issue 3: Directory listings appear irrelevant (Pakistan, etc.)
All the directories we submit to are general English directories targeting a global audience, none are country specific.
Issue 4: Low PR and same IP
There are a few directories that are owned by the same person but they’re not large in number and not many of those networks in our list. Yes, the mails may look similar but that’s because the directories use the same software scripts and not necessarily because they’re from the same server. As for PR, it’s not a criteria we look at since it’s variable and a directory with a PR0 today may be a PR3/4 a few months from now.
CONCLUSION:
I have notice a huge increase in the number or entries in Google on Page 3 and lower thanks to Directory Maximizer. I am changing my tune with them and now recommend the service. However, I still caution and submitting too much too quick. I will probably wait about six months and finish the submissions which I have already paid for.

Derrick,
It has now been several months since my last comments to your blog entry. My website is recieving a google penalty and my only conclusion was that it was either penalized for spammy content or penalized for Link Submissions or something else. I had posted a discussion forum which I have now am taken down to later build on another URL. SEO for an ecommerce site is tricky and requires a lot of guesswork. One thing that I fear is that the submission to Directory Maximizer may have contributed to the Google Penalty. That is not certain; nevertheless, this is what I suspect.
I have decided to change my url to http://tirechaindealer.com.
I have absolutely decided to no longer risk services such as Directory Maximizer in my SEO strategy.
Furthermore, very few of the directory submissions show up when I query www.tire-chain-dealer.com in the Google search bar indicating to me that either the directories are not indexed, or they are banned sites in bad neighborhoods.
I now wish to give my opinion that this is a service that should not be used, will not benefit you, and may hurt you.

Hey Derrick,
I just came across this post & went through the views expressed above. I know time has eclipsed on this post, but with your permission as a representative of Directory Maximizer I would like to publicly address all the visitors to this post & put to rest the myths surrounding directory submissions.
Please note – Directory Submissions CANNOT harm a website, because if that were the case it would be very simple to bring down competitors websites. At worst, Google would ignore the links from the directories, but it would never penalize someone for their incoming links, as they’re aware that the incoming links aren’t in ones control.
Trust this should help, should any of you have any further doubts, concerns or complaints (this is for those of you who’ve used our service), please do not hesitate to write in to me at kunaldavid [at] maximizer-e-services [dot] com, I’d be more than glad to address them.
Season’s Greetings & Best wishes for 2009!
Cheers,

I think I woud have to agree with Kunal David. If bad directory submissions caused a site to move down in serach engine rankings or even get banned. Then spammers or competitors could cause do your site damage by using directory submissions. At worst google will ignore the links and nbot count them, but I cannot punish you for them.

After reading this blog and comments I have decided that perhaps the small investment is worth the risk of the links not being counted.
