You've Got 3 Seconds....Then They're Gone!
I was at Blogging For Business blog today,
and Ted Demopoulos did this great post -
"You've Got 3 Seconds...And They Are Gone!" . Ted says, "3 seconds -- that's how long the average web surfer will spend before they decide to stay or leave.
You NEED to make a great first impression!Your blog had better NOT be ugly. Heinous glaring colors, too much stuff all over the place, hard to read fonts, unexpected audio that starts playing, etc.
So, what's ugly? Can you tell? I can not!I get a pro -- someone with a great eye, perhaps a graphics person, artist, etc. for an opinion."
He is so right! And also last week we mentioned Seth Godin's banana philosophy. I totally agree with both of them. The first impression must catch their eye, catch their attention and you need a banana at the top, as Seth says. I meet more clients that have blogs that are, how can I say? a mess! Too much clutter. You need a little flair or artistic sense to present your information, and photos if you choose, in a pleasing manner. If you need help from someone, ask! You want your readers to stay!
I look at my blog as a magazine. I like illustrations and photos to make it more eye appealing. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Not everybody is going to like the same thing. My friend doesn't like a lot of photos and illustrations on her blog, and I don't like blogs that are all type! So there are lots of decisions to make. But what I am saying is having several people look at your blog and give you their honest feedback.Learn How To Create A Vibrant Blog Today with our E-Learning Tutorial!

I love the analogy of "my blog as a magazine." I'd also add "and you are the editor," especially when it comes to borderline questionable comments. Do they add value to the reader? Well, it's your call as the editor, and it's not an ethical issue (unless you make it one!) as many insist.
And thanks for the nice words Derrick!
